Dozens were left homeless after a massive fire in an apartment in western Harris County.

Officials said the wind played a major role in how quickly the fire spread.

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – over 50 people left homeless on Tuesday morning after a massive fire in an apartment in western Harris County.

Several agencies responded to large plumes of smoke at night at the Cozumel Apartments on Sierra Blanca Drive, near the Westpark toll road and Highway 6.

When crews arrived, severe damage was seen along the roofline and upper floors. Some of the apartments lost everything, but, fortunately, everyone got out safely.

Firefighters said the wind played a big role in spreading the fire.

“Upon arrival, we discovered that about five units were badly damaged by fire due to today’s nightly wind,” said Chris Parrent of the local volunteer fire department. “The fire spread very quickly.”

In total, 20 units were destroyed by fire. The Harris County Fire Department is now investigating the cause.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross was called to the residential complex to help families find a place to sleep.
