Windy weather in Bay Area: 2-year-old boy in stable condition after tree crashes into home in Santa Cruz Mountains, family says

Boulder Creek, California (KGO) — The 2-year-old boy is in stable condition after a tree crashed into his home in Boulder Creek on Tuesday afternoon, the family said.

The Santa Cruz Mountains are often the hardest hit by winter storms, and Boulder Creek Tuesday was no exception due to strong winds.

Neighbors in Boulder Creek collect branches, sweep up trash and clean up after winds they say were unlike anything they’ve ever felt.

“It was chaos,” neighbor Pat McKue said. “Wires, we heard crackling.”

“I felt the ground rumble like an earthquake,” neighbor Yvonne Grunstein Harvey said. “I went out and couldn’t walk on my deck, there was rubbish everywhere.”

A massive tree over 100 feet high broke through a fence and two houses, pulling wires with it.

Amid the chaos, cries for help from a mother inside one of the houses.

McCue rushed to the aid of the parents of a 2-year-old boy who was knocked down by branches that broke through the roof of their house.

“I just cleared out the trash and paved the way,” McCue said. “It was a wonderful, rather heartbreaking time with my father. Nothing could be done. The tree fell right into the child’s lap.”

The quick work of many neighbors helped save Milo.

Some raced down the mountain to get cellular service to call 911, while others cleared the way for emergency responders.

Boulder Creek Fire took Milo to the hospital, where he was treated for broken legs, pelvis, and skin cuts. The family says he must survive.

McCue called it a miracle.

“I stayed until the fire brigade arrived, but it was tough,” McCue said. “So when the family came this morning to pick up their things, he told us that the baby had an operation, that he was no longer sleeping and that he was not sleeping. It just made me feel good.”

The parents express their gratitude to the neighbors, as well as to the emergency services and doctors who treated him at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

The GoFundMe page was created to help with Milo’s recovery costs.

The area is now focusing its attention on the next stormy days ahead.

At any given moment, they know that any of the massive trees around their houses may be next to fall.

But they are moving forward, preparing for the next one. They say it’s just part of life in the mountains.

“We’ve been through it, we’ve been through fire, we’ve been through landslides and all that stuff,” McCue said. “We just love living here.”
