Who is Trent Sherfield? Former WR Dolphins Joins The Bills (7 Things You Need To Know)
The Buffalo Bills have added another wide receiver to their free agent roster by signing Trent Sherfield to a one-year deal.
Sherfield, 27, will remain with the AFC East after spending the 2022 season with the Miami Dolphins. In addition to Miami, Sherfield has spent time with the San Francisco 49ers (2021) and the Arizona Cardinals (2018-2020). Sherfield joins the Bills after a season in which he set career highs in receptions (30), yards (417) and touchdowns (2).
Now at Buffalo, here’s what fans need to know about their newest receiver.
Part of the infamous 2022 butt
The Dolphins held on to a win over the Bills in week three of the regular season, but Miami brought the Buffalo back to life with, well, a hit.
Hitting from the end zone, Dolphins player Thomas Morstead snapped and shot straight to the back of Trent Sherfield. The ball flew out of the end zone due to safety.
Sherfield calmly took the blow. postgame, Sherfield tweeted“I have a big W tattooed on my cheeks.”
Played well against former team last season
Sherfield scored against his former San Francisco 49ers in the first game of their regular season. Sherfield caught a short pass from Tua Tagovailoa in center field and hit for 75 yards. Sixty-five yards came from Sherfield’s catch.
Miami would lose, but Sherfield quickly started the game.
Best Blocker WR PFF
If you want to take the field in Buffalo as a receiver, you need to be able to block. This shouldn’t be a problem for Sherfield. Sherfield was Pro Football Focus’ top blocking receiver last season. This bodes well for James Cook and other Buffalo defenders.
Performed well in yards after a catch above the expected category
Sherfield finished as the third-best wide receiver in the league last season with an above-expected YAC average of 2.1, according to Next Gen Stats. The only recipients rated above Sherfield in this category were Jaylen Waddle (2.8) and Deebo Samuel (2.6).
Former Dolphins teammates upset by his departure
Miami’s top wide receiver tried to bring Sherfield back to Miami this offseason. Are you with us or what? was that Hill wrote to Sherfield on the 17th. After it was announced that he was joining Buffalo, Hill just wrote“omg” with a smiley over a picture of Sherfield signing with the Buffalo.
Safety Jevon Holland also intervened. (NSFW), very upset by this news.
Speed
Sherfield adds speed to Buffalo. The receiver ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 and has the ability to break away from defenders (as seen above in his 75-yard score).
Member of special teams
In addition to being able to play outside or from a slot, Sherfield will most likely get a play jersey for his special team abilities. Throughout his career, Sherfield has been a valued player in special teams.
Sherfield played in 40 percent of the Dolphins’ special team snaps last year and has played at least 40 percent of his team’s special team snaps since 2019.
