This is indicated on food labels. It’s found in almost every food we eat, but what do you really know about sugar?

Did you know that the less sugar the better?

Take a look at the nutrition facts label and check the sugar lines. If the added grams of sugar are zero or close to zero, you are making a healthy choice!

Did you know that added sugars and natural sugars are different?

Natural sugars are found in foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Added sugar can be such as table sugar, syrups or honey, and is found in concentrated fruit and vegetable juices. Added sugars are also called by names such as sucrose or dextrose. Most words ending in “-ose” on a product label are most likely added sugar.

Did you know that natural sugar is healthier than added sugar?

Natural sugars can be found in many foods and drinks, and these foods are generally good for your body. Milk contains natural sugar as well as calcium, protein, vitamin D and other nutrients your body needs. As long as the amount of added sugars on a product’s label is low, you know you’re making the right choice.

Did you know that a smaller container doesn’t mean less sugar?

A small container does not guarantee that there will be less sugar inside than a regular sized container. The amount of sugar will be proportional to the serving size in the container.

Do you choose water or milk to drink with meals?

Water and milk are the best drink choices. If you choose to drink milk with meals, choose unflavored milk. Sugar is usually added to flavored milk.

Do you choose water to drink when you are thirsty?

Juices and sports drinks can contain just as much sugar as soda or fruit drinks. They can be eaten as a treat in moderation, but choosing water or milk is a more nutritious choice. Here’s a tip: If your child doesn’t drink water well, adding lemon to it can improve the taste. If they are sensitive to temperature, keep ice on hand for a refreshing glass of cold water.
