We demand that Santa Cruz City and County officials open 24-hour emergency shelters! : Indibay

March 9, 2023 – Forcing homeless people to stand outside during an atmospheric river in the hope of being one of the lucky 25 to get a spot at the heating center is cruel.

Even though there are enough personnel to keep the cargo building at Depot Park open 24 hours, Santa Cruz officials refuse to let people take shelter from the storm until 8:00 pm, forcing them back into a violent storm in heavy rain at 8:00 am. am. People with pets will have nowhere to protect themselves.

Hundreds of people will be forced to suffer deadly cold rain and wind without shelter, even though the Civic Auditorium and cargo building may be open during this emergency.

In the event that local authorities refuse to open safe places for people to survive the brutality of the atmospheric storm, we call on the police to stop the systematic eviction of homeless people from garages.
