Virginia deputies, hospital staff blamed for Irvo Otieno’s death

Observation Footage from the Virginia psychiatric hospital where 28-year-old Irvo Otieno died on March 6 shows a group of deputies and medical staff pile on handcuffed Otieno in the last minutes before his death. According to Otieno’s family, Otieno had a mental health crisis.

Seven deputies and three hospital employees were charged with second-degree murder.

Washington Post, who received an abridged version of the 23-minute video from the Central State Hospital on Monday, said police dragged Otieno, barefoot and shirtless, into a room before chaining him to the ground for 11 minutes. Moments later, the video shows staff giving chest compressions and a defibrillator to Otieno’s upper body before a medical technician covers him with a white sheet.
