Nuriz Valdez said her granddaughter now has physical and emotional scars. She will go to therapy and go to a new school.

KATHY, Texas. A viral video posted to social media shows high school student Katy ISD surprisingly attacking another girl in a classroom full of students.

The video shows one girl hitting another student repeatedly while others stand and watch.

“Very unpleasant, very outrageous and terrible, very terrible,” Nuriz Valdes said in Spanish.

She is the grandmother and legal guardian of the girl being beaten in the video. She told KHOU 11’s Maria Aguilera that it hurt her to watch the video.

“I saw her so defenseless and another girl hit her hard and she didn’t defend herself,” Valdez said.

The incident took place at Beck High School in Katy ISD.

The headmaster, Dr. Leah Radloff, sent her parents a letter home saying:

“Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff of Beck High School,

“This message is to reassure our parents and guardians that the Beck JH administration is aware of the altercation that occurred in the classroom and is spreading through social media videos. The Management Plan and the Student Code of Conduct will be assessed for disciplinary and possible criminal consequences.

“I would like to reassure parents that the safety of our students at Beck Junior High is our top priority and this kind of behavior is unacceptable on our campus.

“There are several ways students and parents can help school administrators resolve conflicts before an incident occurs. In addition to reporting information to anyone at school or a law enforcement officer, parents can use our Katy ISD SpeakUp mobile app to report tips anonymously. also encourage parents to help their child understand the serious consequences that can result from engaging in or encouraging physical or verbal conflict. With your help, we can effectively continue our commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students.

“Thank you for your continued support.”

Valdez said her granddaughter now has physical and emotional scars. She will go to therapy and go to a new school.

“The psychologist said she was in post-traumatic shock,” Valdez said.

She has filed a police report and is also seeking legal action.

“This is the process we are in right now,” Valdez said.

The Fort Bend District Attorney’s Office said that because minors were involved in the incident, the case is confidential. They said they were aware of the allegation and were looking into it.

The district attorney’s office added that minors could face the same charges as adults, including assault.

Meanwhile, Valdez has a message for other parents and teens: “Violence is not normal. We cannot normalize violence.”

School fights are nothing new, but district officials are urging parents to remind their children that there are other ways to resolve conflicts, such as talking to a counselor.
