Upstate New York daughter and boyfriend plead guilty to teenage murder of her mother

GREECE, NY (AP) — A young woman and her boyfriend pleaded guilty to killing the woman’s mother at her upstate New York home in 2020.

Hannah Thomas, aged 17 at the time of the murder and now 19, pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree manslaughter for the death of Ottilie Piros. Thomas’ boyfriend, Richard Avila, who was 16 when the murder took place and is now 18, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to the same charge.

Each of them faces 25 years in prison and five years of supervision after release, according to a statement from the Monroe County District Attorney’s office.

Both verdicts are due on February 28.

The couple were pulled over for speeding on December 29, 2020 by Missouri State Police who attempted to contact family members of the teens. When police arrived at Otilli’s home in Greece, New York, they found the 36-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound.

The couple were extradited to New York to face death charges.

“Richard Avila and Hanna Thomas killed Hanna’s mother without provocation or reason,” Assistant District Attorney Kevin Sunderland said in a statement. “This senseless murder not only claimed the life of Ottilie Piros, but will ruin the lives of both Hannah Thomas and Richard Avila.”

District Attorney Sandra Dorley called Piros’ murder “heartbreaking” and “a violent act of betrayal.”
