Universal theme park in Frisco becomes a reality

Universal’s first children’s theme park opens in Frisco.

The Planning and Planning Commission recommended a special use permit Tuesday night, which was then approved by the city council in a 4-2 vote, paving the way for construction to begin.

In addition, US$12.7 million in economic incentives have been approved for the project. One of the economic stimulus requirements is the opening of the park by June 2026.

On January 11, Universal Parks & Resorts announced it had purchased a site on the Dallas North Tollway for a new children’s park and hotel. Since then, people have heard from officials during a meeting at Trent High School, city council meetings, and a “meet and greet.”

On Tuesday, residents opposed to the project made the final push to have their voices heard, with traffic, crime and aesthetics being the top concerns.

Residents also expressed their thoughts to the city authorities online by filling out a project input form. At the time the agenda was posted online, 75 people opposed the plan, three supported it, six asked for more information, and one asked the Council to consider it to the public because a park specifically for children probably won’t last long. run.

A traffic study requested by the applicant indicated that the park would receive approximately 7,500 visitors on weekdays, and on peak days, including some weekends and public holidays, the theme park would have up to 20,000 visitors.

According to the city’s filings, the 97-acre development will include attractions, restaurants, plazas, water features, boardwalks, and ponds on approximately 30 acres of the site. The park will also include a 300-room hotel in the first phase, with a further 300 rooms planned for the next phase. The rest of the area will be used for three parking areas (hotel guests, theme park guests and employees), as well as administrative, storage and technical premises.

To help with buffering, the developer will provide canopy trees, shrubs and dams that cover the perimeter fencing and decorate the area with lush green landscaping. The city is also exploring options to connect the city’s walking and cycling system. The Frisco Police Department will work with Universal prior to opening to determine how many officers will be needed and what services will be provided by the police rather than by Universal’s security staff.
