Tyson will close poultry farms in Virginia and Arkansas, which employ more than 1,600 people.

Tyson Foods is closing two facilities that employ more than 1,600 people to streamline its U.S. poultry business.

The company said Tuesday it plans to close its processing, broiler and hatchery operations in Glen Allen, Va., and its plant in Van Buren, Arkansas. Both closings are scheduled for May 12.

Tyson said the closure will help make better use of all available capacity at the remaining plants.

The Springdale, Arkansas-based company said it will work with its 692 employees in Glen Allen and 969 employees in Van Buren to apply for positions at other plants.

Tyson has made other efforts in recent months to consolidate its operations. Last October, the company announced it was moving 1,000 corporate employees from offices in Illinois and South Dakota to Arkansas.

Tyson said operating inefficiencies were partly to blame for lower-than-expected earnings in the first fiscal quarter, which ended Dec. 31. The company said its operating income fell 68% to $467 million over the period.
