Two construction workers injured in the collapse of the facade of the church in Stephenville

On Wednesday, two construction workers were injured when part of a historic Erath County church building collapsed, authorities said.

Green Street First Baptist Church in Stevenville was undergoing renovations when firefighters said the arched façade at the front of the building collapsed onto the steps.

Two construction workers who were on the lift were hit by falling debris. Both of them were hospitalized, but details about their condition have not yet been received.

There is a kindergarten in the historical building, and the pastor of the church says that the children and the teacher at the school were not harmed at the time.

“If it had been a little earlier, we would have had kids in the playground,” said Ken May, Senior Pastor. “And if it was later, the children would have been released and the parents would have taken them.”

It is still unclear what caused the collapse.

Activities inside the building are suspended or moved to another location while crews check the security of the building.
