Tribute to Coastal Defender in San Dieguito Lagoon.

When I was walking the trail from the coast to the ridge a couple of days ago, a little south of the start of the San Andres Drive trail, I came across a sign that pays homage to Peter Douglas. He was an important coastal protector who protected the nearby San Dieguito Lagoon.

I found out I was walking next to Peter Douglas Wetlands.

Gazing at the beauty of the San Dieguito Lagoon, watching birds fly, diving and feeding in the wetlands, and wildlife scurrying through the bush and chaparral, you can appreciate the vision that has led to the conservation and restoration of this scenic and biologically diverse open space. known as the Peter Douglas Wetlands.

Peter Douglas (1942–2012), one of California’s most visionary and inspiring environmentalists, led a successful grassroots initiative in 1972 that resulted in the creation of the California Coastal Commission…

The support and passion of Peter Douglas greatly influenced the ability to… realize (a) the collective dream of preserving these wetlands forever…
