Too many dogs! San Diego Humane Society overrun by dogs

No matter what animal it is, the San Diego Humane Society will never turn down any animal that has nowhere to go. But this policy put them in a very difficult position.

“Since last summer we have seen an influx of dogs, especially adult dogs, and it has never stopped,” said Nina Thompson, director of the Society for Public Affairs.

Last month, the organization reached a record number of dogs in its care: 606 across its four campuses. Now they have dropped to 500, but there are still too many of them. This meant setting up temporary kennels in classrooms, which is not an ideal situation.

“For every two dogs that are adopted by the San Diego Humane Society, one is adopted,” Thompson said.

She added that the length of stay for pets has increased from an average of 24 days last year to 34 days now.

Thus, the Society again provides an incentive for adoption. As part of a joint effort with Mayor Todd Gloria starting Friday, adoption fees will be waived for the first 100 adult dogs aged seven months or older. Once they reach that goal, adult dog adoption fees will be only $25 through Sunday.

But if you can’t adopt, there are other ways to help. The San Diego Humane Society is dependent on donations, and any amount of cash is welcome. They also need other types of donations such as dog food and treats, dog toys, towels, blankets. Everything helps.

The society is also focusing more than ever on dog education and relocation – and it is ready to help those who are ready to help them.

“We have all of these resources on our website at sdhumane.org/rehome so you can find an owner for your pet instead of giving it to a shelter,” Thompson said.

Other resources are available on sdhumane.org to help with parenting, food, veterinary care… everything a human needs to help one of these precious animals get the home and help they need.
