Together with the carnival there is a school for children of showmen

Students learn while traveling with their families.

HOUSTON. There are so many unique things that make the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo what they are, and one of them is family.

And while many of us might see a rodeo and carnival while in town, there are families who put on a show and move on to the next town.

But behind the scenes, family life is as close to normal as can be, even on the road, thanks to the school taking place where the carnival takes place.

“Kammak Christian Academy,” said teacher Kate Bishop.

Teach students in grades K-5.

Ray Cammack Shows (RCS), a carnival troupe that attends seven fairs from around February to November, opened the school in 2015.

This gives the families of famous showmen a chance to be together. For which Father Sam Brooks is grateful because he used to find it hard to see his family.

“Being together was the hardest part because my wife stayed at home with the kids and went out on the weekends,” Brooks said.

RCS has been a family business for 63 years. Many families whose children attend school are multi-generational in the industry.

“Children of the show of the fourth generation. So they, their grandparents, and some great-grandparents were in the business and grew up in it,” Bishop said.

The school uses the educational standards of Arizona and Texas, and Bishop, who was a traditional high school teacher, said she enjoys being able to use individual approaches with her 12 students.

“One of the really cool things is that I can really get into certain subjects and teach them a certain concept,” Bishop said.

Students such as fifth grader Walker Miller, who also attended a public school, said they were in the classroom and faced challenges.

“Tougher… like my old school stuff,” Walker said.

Students can also take tours of the cities they visit, such as San Diego and Phoenix, and see all the great sights in different cities.

Sam’s son Jett said his favorite place in Houston he went to was an easy choice.

“NASA, yes, that’s the first thing that comes to mind: NASA,” he said.

The school also offers something beyond the classroom, an opportunity for these families to be together.

“I go to work, I take them to school, it’s the same place,” Brooks said.

Make sure they don’t miss any of life’s little moments.

“You want to be able to spend time with your family and be together,” Bishop said.
