TikTok, Fuel for Telemedicine Ozempic Shortage

TikTok and telemedicine are causing a shortage of Ozempic, a weight loss drug. CNN reported March 17.

An insulin-boosting, digestion-slowing drug has exploded in popularity, with social media influencers touting it and telemedicine companies prescribing it en masse, leaving some people who use it to treat diabetes unable to get it. WeightWatchers recently agreed to pay over $100 million for Sequence, the company that virtually prescribes Ozempic.

“Oddly enough, the medicine is almost easier to get [via digital health companies]said Disha Narang, MD, endocrinologist and director of obesity medicine at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, Illinois. “But not always the safest.”

Some telemedicine companies allow patients to get a prescription without having to talk to a doctor over the phone or video.
