“This one was bad” | Deer Park residents reflect after an EF3 tornado tore through their community

The NWS confirmed that an EF3 landed in the Houston area on Tuesday.

DEER PARK, Texas. Deer Park residents had to pick up the pieces after an EF3 tornado swept through their community on Tuesday.

“You just have to put one foot in front of the other and do little by little because it’s a lot of work,” said Bobby Slocum, owner of Second Chance Saloon. “But I feel sorry for the people who had it much worse than me.”

With the help of a gas generator, Slocum’s bar was able to keep the beer cold for its customers on Wednesday. Bar workers were scared to death on Tuesday.

“This one was bad,” Slocum said. “They were scared to death.”

But his bar was spared, which can’t be said for most of his other housemates.

“We were really lucky,” Slocum said. — I mean, we are open.

Deer Park resident Lee McDaniel, nine-month-old Presley and six other family members were at their home on Tuesday when they heard the sound of an approaching train.

“I saw the roof come down and made him and my wife go to the bathroom and I sort of hid by the fridge in case the roof came down,” McDaniel said.

By the time the storm had passed, their family car upholstery business, their home, and one of their cars had been destroyed.

“You see, we already have plywood, we have windows closed, we have tarps on the roof, all we can do is make it better,” McDaniel said.

The family’s property was turned into a landfill within minutes during the storm.

“Fortunately, the other member of our family was not here. They would have been in that trailer, and you see what he did, he was flipped,” family members said.

The family said they survived the storm because they did what they had to.

“And that’s why they say stay away from windows,” they said.
