“He saw me that I was knocked down. He started kicking me in the face, in the head. I don’t know, I can’t see well, the video is good,” Rekonko explained. “And that’s something you can’t even do with an animal.”

Reconco had a broken nose, several loose teeth, a swollen face, and red eyes.

He says that prior to the beating, which was caught on camera, the suspect bought several hot dogs and made a demand that Reconco was unable to meet.

“Give me a free hot dog or a free soda,” Reconco recalled. “I told him I couldn’t do it. Because it’s none of my business.”

Reconco said the man then splashed beer in his face and onto the grill before leaving. However, a few minutes later the man returned.

Witness Kim Lara captured what happened next. Her video, which has now gone viral, provides the only insight into the attack.

“I’m Hispanic, so we grew up supporting these street vendors,” Lara described. “And it’s really sad that besides a Mexican, a regional Mexican singer, a concert, a street vendor of our own kind is beating up another kind of us.”

SAP Center management told ABC7 News that safety at events is a top priority.

The statement read, in part: “We continue to actively communicate with the city authorities to ensure the safety of public areas outside the arena for all guests. We will continue to prioritize this issue until an adequate solution is found.”

“Honestly, in the 27 years that I have been doing this is the first time this has happened to me,” Reconco said.

His wife and other family members were nearby, they also worked as sellers.

“These people go to concerts and events to earn extra money. And now he must not only accept the loss of what he should have received, but now must deal with dental treatment, his face and medical bills. , Lara said.

She hopes the video will shed light on the mistreatment of street vendors and somehow lead to justice for Reconko and his family.

“We as a community have a responsibility to protect them. They serve us, they’re there, hardworking, putting away their extra money they have to try and earn some money,” Lara said. “And it’s just heartbreaking.”

San Jose police say the suspect has not been identified.

Reconko has had to take some time off but has shared a verified Venmo account with anyone who wants to donate. Click here to be redirected.
