The infamous Brooklyn club closed a year after a carriage driver was fatally shot.

A liquor license has been withdrawn from a troubled Brooklyn bar where a young cart driver was stabbed to death a year ago while trying to break up a fight, state officials said Saturday.

The cancellation order for Catrina’s Bay Ridge Mexican Grill was issued shortly after the unfortunate anniversary of the murder of 22-year-old Anthony D’Onofrio in a wild hand-to-hand fight in January 2022 outside of a facility repeatedly cited by the State Liquor Administration.

“Finally, after a year,” the victim’s father, Giuseppe D’Onofrio, told the Daily News. “It would be better if they closed this place completely. There were complaints before my son was killed. If they had dealt with this earlier, perhaps my son would have been here.

The cancellation order for Catrina's Mexican Grill in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, was issued following the unfortunate anniversary of the murder of 22-year-old Anthony D'Onofrio in a wild fight outside a restaurant on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

Officials detailed a range of problems with the bar after D’Onofrio was stabbed to death in a 10-man fight on January 29 at the height of a snowstorm at 3:45 a.m. – from underage drinking to illegal drug use, noise complaints, alleged sexual relations . attacks and other violent acts.

The victim “should be alive today, and would be alive if Katrina took the problems of our community seriously,” council member Justin Brennan said. “I am grateful that the state is taking tough measures [to] make sure that what happened to Anthony never happens again to Katrina.”

The death fight took place in front of the store, and another carriage driver said that D’Onofrio was trying to defuse the situation when he was killed.

State Senator Andrew Gunardes, who joined Brannan in demanding that the troubled area be closed immediately after the stabbing, welcomed the long-awaited decision.

“Companies that act with such senseless disregard have no place in our area,” Gunardes said. “It’s a shame that this caused such a loss, but now our community is better.”

A 19-year-old suspect was arrested in a murder case and authorities seized a knife from the teen after he showed up at NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn with a wound on his hand. The D’Onofrio family donated the victim’s organs for transplantation.

Horse-drawn carriage driver Anthony D'Onofrio was killed in a wild fight outside a restaurant on January 29, 2022.

According to Brennan, Katrina has long been causing trouble in the area.

The State Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control, in a three-page complaint before the stabbing, described the business as a “police focus” and cited allegations of serving underage customers, as well as complaints of “noise, disturbance and misconduct” inside and outside the bar.

D’Onfrio of Bensonhurst followed in his father’s footsteps as a teamster and at the age of 8 became a regular in the city’s auto industry.

Friends recalled how the second-generation rider quickly got to work, easily building relationships with horses and his colleagues. After his death, tributes poured on social media, including a video honoring the victim, where one friend described him as “kind, loving, stupid and loyal.”

His father expressed hope that the authorities would continue to monitor the situation at the bar.

“They have to keep a close eye on this and see if any illegal activity continues,” said Giuseppe D’Onofrio, whose son would have turned 23 last month. “It’s okay that it happened, but it had to be done before all this.”
