The Half Moon Bay shooting was caused by a $100 repair bill, according to a local prosecutor.

SAN FRANCISCO. A farm worker accused of killing seven people at two mushroom farms in Half Moon Bay reportedly told investigators he was pushed into the shooting after his boss demanded $100 from him to repair a forklift damaged at work.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe confirmed Friday to the Bay Area newsgroup that Chunli Zhao was furious about the equipment bill, saying a colleague was responsible for the collision between his forklift and bulldozer.

KNTV-TV, NBC’s San Francisco Bay Area affiliate, was the first to report on the developments.

Authorities say Zhao, 66, shot and killed four workers and wounded a fifth worker on Monday at California’s Terra Garden. He then went to the nearby Concord Farms where he had previously worked and fatally shot three former colleagues.

Zhao told KNTV-TV in an interview at the courthouse on Thursday that he carried out the shooting. He said he was bullied and worked long hours on farms and his complaints were ignored, the TV channel reported.

On Monday, Zhao told his boss about the bill, but the boss insisted that he pay. Zhao then allegedly shot the boss and a colleague, news outlets reported.

Speaking in Chinese, Zhao told a television channel from the Redwood City County Jail that he had been in the US for 11 years and had a green card. He said he had a 40-year-old daughter in China and lived with his wife in Half Moon Bay.

The coroner’s office named the six victims: Zhisheng Liu, 73, from San Francisco; Marciano Martinez Jimenez, 50, from Moss Beach, California; Aixiang Zhang, 74, from San Francisco; Qizhong Cheng, 66, from Half Moon Bay; Jingzhi Lu, 64, from Half Moon Bay; and Yetao Bing, 43, whose hometown is unknown.

The indictment documents list José Romero Pérez as the other person killed and Pedro Romero Pérez as the eighth victim who survived.
