The Cowboys put the franchise label on RB Pollard after a year of blockbusters.

The Dallas Cowboys have awarded Tony Pollard with a franchise tag and are still hoping to secure a long-term deal with the runner after a successful season.

If Pollard signed him, the one-year contract would be worth about $10.1 million. The Cowboys and the runner, whose four-year rookie contract was expiring, had until July 15 to agree to a longer contract. Tag Monday came a day before the deadline for such a move.

Pollard became the Cowboys’ best offensive point guard and was selected to the Pro Bowl last season. He rushed for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 39 passes for 371 yards and three more goals during the regular season.

He fractured his left fibula and sprained his high ankle when caught in the first half of a 19–12 loss to San Francisco in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. He has undergone surgery and should be ready for the start of the retreat.

The Cowboys can save on the salary cap by cutting Ezekiel Elliott, who is expected to make $10.9 million next season, to over $16.7 million. There were indications that the three-time Pro Bowl runner was willing to take a pay cut to stay with the Cowboys.

Elliott missed two games last season with a knee injury and finished with a season-high 876 yards. He still hit 12 touchdowns, the fastest hit since 15 as a rookie in 2016.

Pollard, who turns 26 on April 30, was drafted by Memphis in the fourth round in 2019. He averages 5.1 yards per throw, and in 62 career games (six starts) for the Cowboys, he has 2,616 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has 121 catches for 1,007 yards and five touchdowns.
