The author of the famous memoir about surfing came to the San Diego Writers Festival

The Nazarene Writers’ Symposium by the Sea returns this week on the Point Loma University campus. Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Finnegan will be head writer on Wednesday, February 22 at 7:00 pm.

Finnegan is a writer known for his longtime work with the New Yorker as well as his memoir Days of a Barbarian: The Life of a Surfer, which he called “perhaps a long story about trying to grow up”.

“I’ve had such a bipolar life and surfing is the North Pole of irresponsibility,” Finnegan said.

“But there is another impulse, to be a responsible citizen, to contribute – and in my case – as a writer, to have an opinion and to inform my readers. Just like this tension – this tug of war – I think throughout the book. “

Finnegan joined Midday Edition on Tuesday to talk more about his job and love of surfing.
