Texas has $96 million in rent cuts and will begin accepting applications this month.

The state offers help with rent and utilities, but you need to know how to apply.

HOUSTON – Need help with a rental? Later this month, the state is opening a backup of its Texas Rent Relief online portal.

The Texas Department of Housing and Public Affairs has a $96 million relief fund and will begin accepting new online applications again on March 14. It will be open until March 28th.

For the first time, applicants may be eligible for rent and utility bill assistance for up to 18 months, according to the state. This will include either late payments or a combination of late payments and up to three months of current or future payments.

Those who have already received assistance from the program but have not used their full 18 months can submit a request through their online account.

First come, first served, although those at risk of eviction will be given priority.

And if you’re facing eviction, make sure you have legal help and come to your eviction hearing. If you don’t know where to start, call TexasLawHelp.org or call 855-270-7655 to see what options you have.

Once you’ve applied, keep an eye on any responses from Texas Rent Relief to see if they need more information. If they apply and don’t get a response, it could delay help.
