Tesla driver dies in California firetruck crash

(Reuters) – A Tesla driver in California died early Saturday after colliding with a fire truck on an Interstate highway, the fire department said.

US regulators are investigating Tesla vehicles with Autopilot driver assistance systems in connection with a series of crashes involving parked ambulances.

Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment outside business hours.

The Contra Costa County District Fire Department said on Twitter that the Tesla passenger was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The official said four firefighters were released with minor injuries after being assessed.

The agency said the truck was blocking I-680 lanes following a previous crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday its 2021 investigation into “Tesla Autopilot and related vehicle systems remains open and active.” It checks if Tesla vehicles adequately provide driver attention.

The announcement follows Tesla announcing a recall of more than 362,000 U.S. vehicles for an update to its Full Self-Driving Beta software after regulators raised concerns that the driver assistance system did not properly comply with road safety laws. movement and may cause accidents.
