Sweetwater police have arrested an alleged ringleader of reckless street racers in the DFW area.

Juan Carlos Rodriguez is accused of recklessly endangering the public on New Year’s Eve at the Grapevine.

SUITEWATER, Texas. Sweetwater police have made an arrest in connection with a group of drivers who “recklessly endangered the public during a New Year’s Eve intersection takeover” in Grapevine, according to a press release from the Grapevine Police Department.

Juan Carlos Rodriguez, 22, has been charged with participating in organized crime, a felony in state prison. A warrant for his arrest was issued on 9 February. Rodriguez was arrested by Sweetwater police on Tuesday, February 21st.

Just after 11 p.m. Saturday, December 31, 2022, Grapevine dispatchers received 9-1-1 calls about vehicles spinning engines, screeching tires and dangerous driving at the intersection of Main Street and Dallas Road.

Officers immediately responded to the area and attempted to pursue the individuals involved. Due to a large crowd of people and several pedestrians on the roadway, the suspects fled.

Officers were able to gather information about the vehicle and license plates, and videos from the crime scene were later posted on social media.

Detectives began an investigation based on this evidence and, with the help of the Dallas police, were able to identify Rodriguez as the mastermind.

The Grapevine Police Department thanked Sweetwater Police and Dallas Police for their assistance in identifying and apprehending Juan Rodriguez. He is jailed in Nolan County and faces 180 days to two years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines if found guilty.
