Suspect arrested for throwing bricks at South End businesses

A suspect is in custody after Boston police said he threw bricks into the air and damaged at least two businesses in the South End.

It happened on Saturday evening shortly before 19:00 in the Schaumut Avenue and Union Park area.

Witnesses told Boston 25 News that the suspect pulled bricks off the sidewalk and started throwing them at random.

One of these bricks hit the window of the South End oil mill, where several customers were sitting inside.

“It was quiet here. All of a sudden we hear a crash,” barista Gina Case said. There is a bench right under this window. They said that just a few minutes before they had been sitting there.

Case immediately called the police from behind the counter.

She said clients helped relay the suspect’s description to officers, who responded within minutes.

“I look out the window, and the guy just walks down the street at his usual pace, slowly,” she recalled. “A little freaky.”

The front window of a nearby CouCou children’s clothing store was also shattered by a brick thrown into the air.

This brick fell on a children’s plate in the center display case.

The hostess told Boston 25 News that her mother had just finished closing and left less than ten minutes before it happened.

Another business owner said he was glad his store was spared.

“I’m glad I don’t have to deal with this headache,” said Joseph Kwan, owner of Patron of the Find. “I think it was just by accident.

The police arrested the suspect in front of the audience.

His identity has not yet been revealed.
