Steve McFadden, Des Moines bar owner charged with stalking, arrested again

Bar owner Steve McFadden was arrested on Friday for violating a contact ban with an ex-girlfriend he was accused of stalking.

McFadden, 53, was due to plead not guilty Thursday in Polk County Circuit Court to one count of stalking, aggravated misdemeanor and five counts of unauthorized use of a GPS tracking device, all serious misdemeanors. But the hearing was continued because the judge did not have time to read the court records filed in the morning.

The charges stem from his January arrest after Ankeny police said McFadden tracked the ex-girlfriend using a global positioning device installed in her car.

McFadden, owner of Tipsy Crow, Grumpy Goat and Dough Mama’s Pizzeria, also allegedly colluded with Edwin Allen III, owner of Zora Bar & Rooftop on Ingersoll Avenue to track the woman to Paws and Pints, a Des Moines bar and dog park .

Allen pleaded not guilty Thursday and declined to comment on the case. McFadden’s lawyer, William Catmus, said Thursday his client pleads not guilty.

Both men have been at the center of a public controversy since their arrest.

Last year, McFadden was convicted of assault with bodily harm to another ex-girlfriend, Victoria Davis, who was 22 when she started dating him and is now 26. There is enough evidence to convict him in court. The Earl was a misdemeanor and was ordered to serve a year of probation. After completing a six-week domestic violence program, he was released from probation and, on a suspended sentence, the conviction was removed from his file.

Since then, Davis has been trying to overturn an injunction McFadden had issued against her last year. She claims that he is trying to manipulate and control her through the legal system.

Both are due in court on March 28 on charges of violating a restraining order. In an interview last month, Davis spoke to Watchdog about the domestic violence she said she endured in her relationship with McFadden. She also spoke about another attack, which she said took place on January 1 in Key West, Florida, where McFadden convinced her to go with him despite a court order. They were arrested upon their return to Des Moines.

The IRS is also trying to recover what it says are unpaid taxes from McFadden. He currently has two nearly $520,000 worth of federal tax liens against his West Des Moines home, county records show. The house, which was listed for sale with a multi-million dollar price tag, has now been taken off the market.
