State Representative Introduces Numerous Religious Freedom Bills

Elected last November, Democratic State Representative Salman Bhojani became District 92’s first Colored Representative. Bhojani is also one of the first two South Asians and Muslims to serve in the Texas Legislature.

“Just so blessed. Breaking the glass ceiling and just not really caring about color or faith or religion or anything. I just work very hard for the people,” said Rep. Bhojani.

Bhojani was sworn in on a historical copy of the Quran, which is over 200 years old. On Tuesday, Bhojani and Republican State Representative Jaycee Jetton will outline their vision for religious freedom in the state.

“I feel like it’s so important that every Texan deserves freedom of religion and their own beliefs, and I think that’s what we’re trying to protect,” Bhojani said.

Bhojani created three bills. An 1882 House bill calls for an increase in non-mandatory public holidays to include the holy days of more denominations. HB 1883 ensures that mandatory state testing and final exams such as STAAR are not held during certain holidays. HB 1884 recognized legal marriages in ceremonies performed by all religious leaders.

“Many people tell me that since I am the first Muslim, I am going to focus only on my faith. I just want to make sure that this really confirms the fact that I want to work with every denomination and for every voter, whether Republican, Democrat or independent,” said Rep. Bhojani.

Bhojani hopes to win the support of the Senate. He told NBC 5 that the next set of bills he’s working on will focus on the economy, health and education.
