Sports Bra Controversy: High School Student Encourages Spring Branch ISD Over Dress Code

The teen and her father said she was unfairly punished for working out in her sports bra.

HOUSTON — A Spring Branch ISD high school student who said she was reprimanded for training in a sports bra while male athletes trained shirtless says.

The girl studies at Spring Woods High School and is on the women’s cross-country and athletics teams. KHOU 11 News chose to hide her identity as she is a minor and fears retribution.

“I saw a couple of guys running around without shirts on and off campus and they weren’t told anything. So, I took off my shirt, obviously, and I got in trouble because of it, ”said the teenager.

After complaining about gender differences between boys and girls, the Texas American Civil Liberties Union said she was denied the award, which is “essential evidence for college admissions and job recruitment.”

She also objected to what she called the “unequal teaching and training of the women’s cross country team”.

“This is so much more than just a sports bra because it was only for the women on the team and not the guys, especially because of my race. the teenager said.

The girl is a junior and said she was punished for wearing a sports bra while exercising in 100-degree heat. She claims she had the best record on the team and was the only student-athlete who never missed a workout.

According to the teenager’s father, they were told in the district that no violations were found. The family is currently in the appeal process.

“This whole situation could have been easily resolved,” the teenager’s father said. “I’m willing to go as far as we need to get some results.”

The ACLU sent a letter to SBISD on behalf of the student warning the school district that this action could result in a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment and Title IX. Click here to read the letter.

The teenager and her father want to see real change.

“I hope to see the county change their policy and that they have a change of heart about what they were saying,” the teen said. “And, like, they actually admit their mistakes.”

The teen said her teammates supported her and she is grateful for that. She also said that she still loves the sport and does not give up performing for herself and others like her.

Here is the statement posted by Spring Branch ISD:

“ISD Spring Branch denies discrimination of any kind and treats students equally and fairly. We are aware of a situation with one student at one of our high schools who is unhappy with the SBISD practices that apply to all athletes on that campus. SBISD is currently investigating. this business”.

The Texas ACLU released this statement and said it invited the county to the meeting:

“The ACLU chose to support GH advocacy because the district’s dress code is clearly discriminatory, placing restrictions on girls that boys don’t, based on harmful and outdated gender stereotypes. with an unequal treatment of training and training, which signals to female athletes that they are not viewed as serious sports rivals with serious potential. she spoke for herself and her teammates. We sent our letter to the county on March 1st and invited the county to meet so we can work together on these very serious issues.”
