Craftship helps kids develop problem solving skills through art!

PHILADELPHIA — Mastery focuses on developing problem-solving skills through the creative process.

“I think it’s very important that children can solve problems with their own hands,” says owner Steph Kimmel.

Kimmel has combined her experience in the arts and education into one passionate project: helping children, adults, and families connect through art.

Kimmel, located in the Bok Building in South Philadelphia, hosts classes where kids can have fun, play with their friends, and learn new skills.

Kimmel’s background in arts and crafts began as an outlet that helped her focus on life.

“Because I’m an adult with ADHD, my brain moves so fast. When I do something with my hands, time slows down,” said Kimmel.

When the kids come to The Craftship, Kimmel notices that the kids also get the calming effects of the art.

“They calm down and focus, and watching what happens is something magical,” said Kimmel.

The lessons of Kimmel are learned in the process of creation, and not as a result of striving for a result.

“The confidence they gain in the process of building is really key,” Kimmel said.

What are children learning?

“The confidence that… I can do anything,” says Kimmel.

Kimmel’s workshops are held on specific dates and times, which can be found on her website.
