Snow slammed: Buffalo area residents share hurricane-like blizzard videos, photos to social media

Barely a month after an intense November snowstorm buried residents in Western New York and just a week away from widespread lake effect event, a new “bomb cyclone” blizzard is currently paralyzing the Buffalo and the surrounding areas with high-velocity winds, snow, and plummeting temperatures.

The New York State Thruway has been closed in both directions between exits 57 (Hamburg) and exit 57A (Eden/Angola) after high tension power lines were knocked down by high winds, according to state police.

The National Weather Service has clocked gusts as strong as 79 miles per hour, which is as strong as a Category 1 hurricane.

Last minute Christmas shoppers will have to wait as Walden Galleria, the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, and grocery stores in the area have decided to close due to dangerous driving conditions.

The storm was forecast to be so powerful and so disruptive that it happens only once every few decades. With the greater Buffalo area being surrounded by both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, it’s a recipe for the worst of Old Man Winter’s fury.

Several shoreline towns were ordered to evacuate as waves and frozen spray could cause serious damage to the area. A state emergency banning commercial vehicles from travel on the Thruway was declared at 6 a.m. on Friday.

Residents have hunkered down and have shared the storm with their followers on social media, updating as the weather progresses.
