‘Skate Session & Healing Village’ honors Tyr Nichols and offers community support: Indybay

One of the main objectives of the Anti-Police Terror Project is to help those who are traumatized by police killings, from affected families to society at large. So, following an emergency march and rally on Jan. 29 demanding justice for Tire Nichols, two days after the Memphis police released a video showing the horrific violence committed against Tyre, APTP held a community skate session and Healing Village on Feb. 4. Thanks to many other qualities, Tyre Nichols was an avid and talented skateboarder.

“Justice for Tyr Nichols: Community Skate Session and Healing Village” took place at Lil’ Bobby Hutton Park in West Oakland, officially known as DeFremery Park. Bobby Hutton was the youngest member of the Black Panther Party and was killed by Oakland police on April 6, 1968, two days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

At Healing Village, tents and support services were set up next to a skate park called Oakland Town Park. Davey D was running the turntables inside one of those tents, and his sound system was playing tunes all over the place.

Three massage tables have been set up to relieve stress and tension from the body of visitors free of charge. One was donated by Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice. In another tent there was a meditation circle. Free food and drinks were provided by the organizers.

Unfortunately, it rained all day, sometimes heavy, with strong winds, so the weather was far from ideal for skateboarding and attendance was relatively low compared to other similar healing events in the past.

APTP regularly schedules similar events in the Bay Area and Sacramento. You can check their website at antipoliceterrorproject.org or subscribe to their email list for future ones.
