Around 6 a.m. Saturday, workers were on their way to work in a bus on State Route 37 in Louisville when the bus collided with a van, officials said.

The medium-sized bus owned by LBFNY was carrying 15 people, National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman told reporters on Monday.

The driver of a 2021 Freightliner box truck traveling in the opposite direction on a two-lane highway at 55 mph crossed the center line and collided with a bus, Chapman said. The crash occurred west of Massena, near the Saint Lawrence River.

According to him, in addition to six people were killed, several more people, including both drivers, were injured and were taken to hospitals. At the time of the crash, the weather was not bad.

The on-site investigation is expected to last four to six days, Chapman said.

Louisville City Chief Larry Lego said on Monday that the people on the bus were working at a solar farm on the Route 28 district in the city of Lisbon. He believes they have been working on the project for at least a month. He said the accident happened about 20 or 25 miles from the solar farm.

The workers are staying at the Econo Lodge Motel in Louisville, Lego said.

According to Chapman, the box truck was leased to Penske and leased to a trucking carrier. According to him, the driver was the only person in the box truck.
