Show him money? The Bills’ Ed Oliver may have made the claims known in the deleted Instagram post

Ed Oliver may have hit delete, but the internet is forever.

On Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills quarterback posted on his Instagram story that he was open to a massive pay raise. Oliver’s post read: “Show me the money or Ion wants to talk!!!”

Although the story was posted on Instagram almost 24 hours in advance, it was deleted hours before that time.

Oliver, 25, was offered a fifth year option last season. In doing so, Buffalo will pay Oliver a guaranteed $10.753 million in 2023. This is a significant pay increase from what Oliver earned in his first four seasons with the Bills, and it could be argued that this is an overpayment based on his performance.

The former 2019 NFL Draft No. 9 shone for Buffalo at times, but he didn’t come close to the type of consistent play the Bills were probably hoping to get from defensive gear. In 2022, Oliver started in 13 games for the Bills. He recorded 2.5 sacks last season, which was the lowest of his career, but finished the season with 14 QBs, matching his career high of nine tackles for loss and one safe.

If Oliver did ask Buffalo to “show him the money”, this could only be done through an extension. It’s a tricky question, given that defensive gear doesn’t have a breakout season to date to warrant that kind of money. In his current form, Oliver has little leverage in terms of securing a new contract with Buffalo that cemented a defensive tactic for 2023. However, if he breaks out in his last season on the contract, Oliver will have all the leverage after the season.
