SDSU investigates Legionnaires’ case and closes on-campus building

San Diego State University closed its Exercise and Dietetics building Monday as it investigates a reported case of Legionnaires’ disease in a “campus community member.”

Symptoms of the disease, also known as legionella pneumonia, include cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle aches and headaches, and the disease can be carried through water systems.

The university’s environmental and safety team has been working with the county’s health and human services agency to investigate the case and identify and confirm a potential source, according to the university.

The patient is away from campus and is recovering, according to the university. It is currently unknown where the person was exposed to the Legionella bacteria, but “as a precaution, the university is closing the ENS building for testing. All students, faculty, staff and visitors must avoid entering the building until testing is complete.” and it is cleared for re-entry.”

Only one case has been reported and no connection to the campus has been established, but the university is taking extra precautions given the severity of the illness, officials said.

University officials have reminded students, staff, and faculty not to come to campus when they are sick and, if diagnosed with legionellosis, to report the case to campus using the health advisory form. More information is available on the Health Advisors website.

Students have been urged to contact instructors with questions about courses to find out if classes have been canceled or moved online this week.

Faculty have been asked — after consultation with the dean, department head, or school principal — to contact students about class plans, whether classes will be canceled or moved online.
