Sarasota police are looking for a suspect who hit one of their officers with a car.

SARASOTA, Florida. On Monday, March 20, around 2:00 pm, officers were called to Mourning Dove Drive at Bird Key after reports of stolen items from vehicles were received. Officers said the suspect was driving a white four-door Mercedes sedan.

Just after 9 p.m., Sarasota police reported that the Mercedes had returned to Bird Key and attempted to block entry and exit from the area in an attempt to stop the suspect.

The suspect in the Mercedes was driving backwards towards the police and their cars. Surveillance video shows one of the police officers running out from behind patrol cars and then being hit by a Mercedes.

The injured officer was able to get up and was taken to the nearest hospital. The officer is expected to make a full recovery.

“We all gasped when we saw the officer jump about four to six inches and save his life because it allowed him to flip over the car and fall to the ground,” Sarasota Police Chief Rex Trosh said.

Sarasota police said a white Mercedes was found abandoned in the 2900 block of Orange Avenue.

The police are still trying to find the driver of the Mercedes. If anyone has information, call the Sarasota Police Department at 941-263-6827 or the Crime Squad at 941-366-TIPS (8477).
