Santa Fe Rancho Student Named 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar

James Howe, a 17-year-old Santa Fe ranch resident and a Bishop high school senior, was recently named the 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar of the Year. Considered the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school students, 300 scientists were selected from 1,949 entries based on their outstanding research, leadership qualities, community engagement, academic commitment, creativity in posing scientific questions, and exceptional leadership prospects. STEM .

James was awarded for his research project “Near real-time seismic casualty information extraction from social networks using large language small format models”.

This project provides a direct solution to a critical problem facing the USGS. The framework he proposes, which extracts information about earthquake victims from social networks, helps scientists and earthquake loss prediction models gain immediate access to data at the epicenter of earthquakes around the world.

The 300 Regeneron Scholars will receive $2,000 each, and their schools will also receive $2,000.
