San Mateo County Supervisors pay tribute to victims of Half Moon Bay mass shooting at first meeting since tragedy

HALF MOON BAY, California (KGO) — At the first meeting of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors after seven farm workers were shot dead on the job at two separate farms in Half Moon Bay, their lives were honored with prayer and every leader just eight days after the tragedy.

“Now we are trying to figure out how we can move forward and change in such a way that we can move forward and make the coast, renew the coast, like a beacon for many years to come?” – Ray. Mueller, San Mateo County Executive, said.

Supervisor Muller, representing Half Moon Bay, discusses lessons learned from the shooting, sheds light on the living conditions of farm workers that were called into question in the days following the shooting, and now calls for action to seize the moment.

“Move them to affordable housing that is healthy and safe and has the quality they deserve and their families deserve,” he said.

Supervisor David Canepa is also asking everyone to work together to find solutions not only for better living conditions but also for mental health to prevent a similar tragedy from happening again.

“These massacres continue to happen and things have to change,” Canepa said. “Government can’t solve every problem, neither can nonprofits or businesses, but when you work together and we’re strong, we stand united and together we’re stronger.

Now we turn to Governor Newsom for help.

“Gov. Newsom, you came and visited us, thank you for visiting the victims, but please double, quadruple the resources we need for farm worker housing and mental health, we need help as counties,” he said.

Also during Tuesday’s meeting, county officials declared the first week of February National Gun Violence Survivors Week.
