CD Wright described Roberson’s work as “lyrical poetry of elaborate design and enduring emotional significance”, comparing its musical qualities to that of saxophonist Steve Lacey, jazz pianist Thelonious Monk and composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The poet and critic Reginald Gibbons, in his review of The New Wing of the Labyrinth, celebrates Roberson as “a master of the obsessive-meditative rhythm of thought and perception.”

“I am not creating a new language. I’m just trying to whitewash what we have,” Roberson said in a 2006 interview with the Chicago Postmodern Poetry.

Roberson’s awards include the 2016 Ruth Lilly Prize for Poetry, the Lila Wallace Writers Prize, the American Poetry Society’s Shelley Prize, and the 2016 PEN/Volker Prize for Poetry. His work has been included in the list of the best American poems.
