San Diego Cold Storm Gifts, Hurricane Wind, High Surf, Valentine’s Day Snow Mix

The winter storm system blows fast in San Diego County, but brings powerful winds up to 100 mph in the mountains, frost in interior valleys, and big waves along the coast.

The storm will pass by noon on Wednesday, but before then much of the county can expect wild weather, especially in the form of strong winds and cold. Here’s what to expect:

On the coast

Areas along the coast are under a wind advisory from 2 pm to 10 pm with gusts up to 40 mph expected. At this time, the wind can blow away tree branches, power lines and other loose objects, the National Weather Service warns.

“Wet soil could increase the threat of tree fall,” the meteorological agency added.

Meanwhile, some showers are possible, though they are expected to ease by nightfall.

According to NBC 7 meteorologist Sheena Parveen, those who go out into the water should be careful of high waves and powerful reverse currents. The highest surf will be in the southern part of the district. The High Surf Alert is in effect from Tuesday 10:00 am to Wednesday 2:00 pm.

It is possible that strong surf and gusty winds can also lead to beach erosion, such as the recent rock falls that have spooked holidaymakers.

hinterland

These gusty winds will also affect communities inland, although these areas are not covered by any advisory or warning. Some rain may continue during the day, but the region will dry out by night.

However, by the time the storm system emerges from the region, it will leave extremely cold temperatures in its wake.

“We are finally seeing things starting to dry out until Wednesday morning,” Parvin said. “Wednesday morning will be cold.”

A frost warning has been issued for the interior valleys as temperatures dip into the 30s at night. Consultations from midnight to 8 am Wednesday.

Mountains and deserts

The mountain can see gusts of hurricane force during this storm system. On some peaks, wind gusts can reach 100 miles per hour, while in most other areas wind speeds reach 80 miles per hour. Even deserts could see the winds in the 80s.

A strong wind warning is in effect in the mountains and deserts until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The storm system also dumps lingering downpours and possibly some snow onto the mountains.

School closures

Strong winds forecast closed schools in the Mountain Empire Unified School District for Tuesday. Schools in the Julian Union Elementary School District had a late start to classes on Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Department of Education.

Schools in Spencer Valley and Warner Unified School District, which had a late start on Monday, operated as normal on Tuesday.

What’s next?

Wednesday morning will be unusually cold. Expect temperatures around 40 degrees on the coast, 34 degrees on land, 39 degrees in the mountains and 36 degrees in the mountains.

After Wednesday, the temperature will approach the norm for this time of year. In most areas, the temperature will be 60 degrees until the end of the week, and light rains are possible at the weekend.
