San Diego Aztecs put clamps on Spartans to stay in 1st place

If you want to win a conference championship, you absolutely cannot do what you do at home to teams that are clearly more talented than you. San Diego State is clearly more talented than San Jose State, and on Saturday night at the Viejas Arena tried to achieve this result.

The Aztecs used their dominant defense to hold the Spartans to 14 points in the 1st half en route to a 72-51 victory. At one point spanning the first and second halves, San Jose State went 13:46 without a field goal. It could have been a total failure, but the Aztecs, and the Aztecs themselves, had a free shooting night.

SDSU didn’t convert a single 3-pointer in the first half, but it wasn’t necessary because they hit a lot of shots close to the basket. Forward Keshad Johnson scored 12 of his career-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes, many of them from dunks and layups. In the 2nd half, defenseman Matt Bradley started to warm up, scoring seven points in two minutes (he finished with 14 points) to extend the lead to 46-19.

San Jose State finally began to lose a few shots and at one point made the situation a little uncomfortable, reducing the lead to 11 points. But the deficit was too great to overcome, and one sequence towards the end of the game contained the entire evening:

Jadon LeDi missed with a paint jumper and landed on his back. He was able to get up and catch a rebound between four Spartans (again, LeDi literally fell) to renew his attack and was then rewarded with a good pass from Lamont Butler for rebounding and fouling.

The Aztecs improve to 8-1 in Mountain West and 17-4 overall, maintaining a one-game conference lead over Boise State. SDSU will travel to Nevada on Tuesday and see BSU on Mount Montezuma for the first time on Friday night.
