SAN ANGELO, Texas. Learning multiple languages often helps students academically and in their personal lives.

For many Spanish speakers, the easiest way to learn English is as a child, so they will be bilingual as an adult.

Starting at 6:00 pm on March 21, San Angelo Independent School District will host a “Manos a la Obra” or “Hands on Deck” event to promote its bilingual program for students.

The event will include book giveaways, refreshments, activities with Lake View High School students, storytelling, and more to promote language education.

The program itself was first launched three years ago to help children learn to read, write, listen and speak English with the goal of mastering it by third grade.

“At SAISD, we give our students a better chance of getting a job or advancing their career through our bilingual program and other resources,” said Christy Diego, SAISD Director of Bilingualism and English.

The event was sponsored by various San Angelo organizations including the Child Welfare Center, the Adult Literacy Council, the Concho Valley Community Action Agency, and others.

This event is free to the public.
