Racers on the southwest trail begin their journey to Houston before the RodeoHouston parade.

These riders have a 100-mile journey from Western Columbia to Memorial Park.

HOUSTON — The 100-mile journey began from Western Columbia in Brazoria County on Sunday morning as the Southwest Trail ride began its journey to Houston.

It is one of the largest of the 10 routes and will pass through Macbeth, Juliff and Fresno before stopping at Memorial Park on Friday. Of course, these riders will then be part of the downtown rodeo parade on Saturday morning.

Rosetta Grey, who has been a trail boss for over 10 years, made her first trail ride 42 years ago.

“The first one I rode, I rode a van,” she said. “After that, I said, “No.” I said, “Mom, I hate this van. I need to ride.”

The next year she was on horseback and every year since then.
