Auckland School Board rejects resolutions to cut budget and lay off staff

OAKLAND, CA (KGO) — The Oakland Unified School District’s efforts to cut costs and raise wages for some employees have seen new developments following a board meeting in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The board voted against two resolutions. In one, the budget would be cut, including the elimination of some posts, and in the other, secret personnel would be cut.

The ordinance for the reduction of secret personnel included the dismissal of 98 positions.

Board papers state that this was considered due to a lack of funds or work due to factors such as reduced enrollment and increased costs. The documents also stated that other classified areas should be increased. This would mean higher wages for teachers and other district employees.

Community members spoke out during the public comment.

“There is no broad support in the community, and certainly not from a black organization project to cut such secret positions,” one person said. “These positions, which are the backbone of the school district, keep our schools safe and build the most caring and deepest relationships with students, with families, and we don’t support them.”

One member of the board of directors called it very disappointing that the resolution to cut secret personnel failed.

March 15 is the deadline for filing notices of termination.

The board will have to come back with new proposals for cuts if they want to continue the pay hike.

Their next meeting will be on March 8th.

The meeting took place the night before Oakland Unified will host a recruiting event on Wednesday for anyone interested in becoming part of its staff for the 2023-24 school year.

Several positions are available, including school staff, full-time teachers, classroom support staff, and deputies.

The in-person event will take place at the Oakland High School Multi-Purpose Hall from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
