Power outage at John F. Kennedy Airport due to electrical panel failure; Fire extinguished, officials say

An electrical panel failure at JFK Airport resulted in a power outage on Thursday, causing turbulence for travelers, officials said.

The outage occurred at Terminal 1, the hub for international flights. Panel failure “also caused a small fire during the night, which was immediately extinguished,” according to the Port Authority.

“The power outage is currently impacting the terminal’s ability to receive inbound and outbound flights,” the port authority said in a statement.

“The Port Authority and its terminal operators are working together to accommodate affected flights using other terminals. Travelers are strongly advised to check flight status with their carriers.”

Numerous international flights originally scheduled to land at the Queens terminal have been diverted to other airports, including Newark, Boston and Washington DC, according to the JFK website. Others have been delayed and some, including flights from Paris and Mexico City, have been canceled entirely.

JFK announced the problem just before noon and then tweeted to frustrated passengers that officials were working to “mitigate the effects” of the power problem. AirTrain Station in Terminal 1 reopened until 13:00— reported at the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration said it was “committed to restoring power so we can resume normal checkpoint operations.”

“We have also reallocated resources to cope with increased passenger traffic at other terminals,” the TSA said in a statement.
