Police officer seriously injured after being hit by a stolen car in the Buffalo area

Cheektowaga, New York. A police officer was seriously injured after he was hit by a stolen, fleeing car in the Buffalo area early Monday morning, police said.

Officer Troy Blackcheef was hit by a stolen vehicle shortly after 4:30 a.m. in Cheektowag, Cheektowag Police Chief Brian Gould said during a press conference. According to Gould, Blackchief, a 17-year veteran of the department, tried to put on stripes to puncture the tires of two stolen cars and help stop the chase.

Blackchief is in critical condition at the Erie County Medical Center, according to police.

“We pray and hope that Officer Blackchief will recover from his injuries today,” Gould said.

The call, which ended in an accident, began around 4:30 am in Depew, a village located between Cheektowaga and Lancaster.

Depew police were investigating reports of stolen vehicles when stolen vehicles were spotted near Walden Avenue and Depew Road in Depew, Gould said during a news conference. The press conference was broadcast by WIVB.

According to Gould, Depew police pursued vehicles following the suspects into Cheektowagoo.

According to Gould, Blackchief was laying brake lights – devices used by police to deflate tires and stop chases – on Union Road near Genesee Street when one of the stolen cars hit him. According to the police chief, he was seriously injured and is not responding.

As the suspects in the two stolen cars continued to run, police officers stopped to help the badly injured officer, Gould said. Blackchief, 45, was rushed to the hospital and operated on, he said.

The suspects remain on the run.

One of the stolen vehicles was found abandoned at a gas station at Kensington Avenue and Century Road in Cheektowag, Gould said. According to him, the second vehicle, which, according to the deputies, was involved in the chase, a maroon 2019 Jeep Cherokee with a license plate KKS 5300, has not yet been found.

Chektovaga police have asked anyone who has noticed the second stolen vehicle or has information about the suspects to call Lieutenant Dan Albrecht at (716) 686-7461.

Blackchief, a husband and father of three, made headlines in 2020 for rescuing a dog from a cold stream and in 2021 for helping a woman trapped under a car, according to WKBW.

Gould said he was confident that the Cheektowaga Police Department would find the driver who hit Blackchief.

“Our mission now is to ensure Officer Blackchief is given the best possible care, the support of his family, the support of our officers, and the prosecution of those responsible, which we will do,” the police chief said. .
