Police arrest burglary suspect after crashing into house on southwest side

Officers said the driver was driving at high speed when he lost control and crossed a shallow dry stream, then through a barn and crashed into a house.

SAN ANTONIO — Police have arrested a burglary suspect who allegedly crashed his car into a home on the southwest side Monday night.

No injuries were reported.

Officers responded to the 5900 block of Mariner Street near Old Pearsall Road around 11:35 p.m. where San Antonio Police Department officials said the driver was speeding when he lost control, crossed a dry creek bed, crashed into a barn, and finally crashed to the house.

The barn sustained major damage, while the house received only minor damage.

“It was like an explosion and then the house shook,” said Diana Mosqueda.

He says he heard tires screech, followed by a loud crash as the pickup truck crashed through wooden barriers and crashed into the wall of his parents’ house.

Mosqueda says that the shed was their salvation. Despite the fact that he took the brunt, the truck still crashed into the wall.

Large cracks formed inside the house right next to his brother’s bed. Mosqueda is grateful that the roof did not collapse.

“(My brother and I) checked on my mom and then left,” she said. “We saw the guy trying to back up.”

Mosqueda says they asked if the driver was okay, after which he reportedly told her that he “didn’t want to go to jail because he had kids.” She says that then the driver left.

A group of neighbors gathered around the scene gave chase.

The police arrested the man and searched his truck. Authorities say he was wanted for a recent burglary, but officials did not say if he was pursued by police before he crashed into the house.

Diana is relieved that the damage was only structural.

“Thank God nothing happened (to my family),” she said.
