Patient arrested for Brooklyn psych facility murder, NYPD says

A Brooklyn psychiatric patient with a history of violence has been arrested for killing another patient at his facility, police said Saturday.

NYPD detectives arrested Tysheen Ashby, 33, for killing Shakim Devega at the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Prospect Lefferts Gardens.

Both men were living at the Clarkson Ave. psychiatric center on September 20, when Devega, 28, was found unconscious at around 11:45 p.m. cops said. Medics rushed him to Kings County Hospital, where he died.

An autopsy revealed that Devega died from “sustained trauma to the neck and neck area,” said police, who declared his death a homicide.

Ashby was taken into custody at the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center on Friday. He was charged with murder and was ordered held without bail during a brief arraignment proceeding Friday night.

It wasn’t clear if Ashby and Devega knew each other before the fatal clash. A motive for the killing was not disclosed.

Ashby has been arrested repeatedly for assault in the past, police sources.

In 2015 Devega was sentenced to a year in prison on an attempted robbery conviction in 2015. He was released in 2016, but was arrested two years later for sexually abusing a 6-year-old boy, police said.

He was convicted of attempted sexual abuse in 2019 and was released last year after serving two years behind bars, according to court records.

After his release, his name was added to the state’s sex offender registry and he was moved to the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center, cops said.
