Pascoe’s father arrested in 9-year-old son’s death case after finding ‘fentanyl toxicity’

A Pasco County father has been charged with manslaughter after his 9-year-old child died after taking fentanyl left at his home, according to court records.

On June 23, 2022, 33-year-old Brad Thorne left his son at home alone earlier in the day, running errands., and when he returned, According to court records, the child was playing games on his tablet. Thorne said at the time that his son “didn’t complain of any health issues.”

Court records state that the boy then said he was going to take a shower. Thorne went to check on him some time later and found that he was not breathing, deputies said.

The arrest report states that Thorne escorted the boy out of the house to undergo cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At this point, Thorne called 911. Pasco County Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and the child was taken to Trinity HCA Hospital in Florida, where he was pronounced dead according to court records.

Doctors at the hospital said there were no signs of trauma on the boy’s body that could have led to his death, court records say. The Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner’s Office later determined the child’s cause of death to be “fentanyl toxicity”.

Later that day, after the child’s death, helpers returned to Thorne’s home. According to the protocol of the court, the deputies found vomiting on the porch. Inside the house, the police saw dog urine, dog droppings, and duck droppings on the floor. In the kitchen, dirty dishes were thrown into the sink and old food was scattered across the counter.

According to court records, in the bathroom where the child was found unconscious, the police cut off straws and “a small bag indicating drug use.” The police found a marijuana bong in the garage.

According to court records, the child was able to get his hands on the drugs easily.

According to the arrest report, Thorne told deputies that he smoked marijuana but did not use other drugs.

Analysis of a straw and sachet found in the bathroom showed “trace amounts of fentanyl”. According to court records, the tests also showed DNA from Thorne and the baby on the straws.

Thorne was arrested on March 9 and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child. According to prison records, he is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bail.

At a prosecution hearing on Monday afternoon, Thorne pleaded not guilty.

Stephanie Pauk, a public defender assigned to represent Thorne, filed a motion to withdraw from the case on Monday, citing “ethical conflicts”.
