Oscars 2023: Jimmy Kimmel takes aim at Will Smith and other celebrities in a monologue

LOS ANGELES — Jimmy Kimmel parachuted onto the stage at the 95th Academy Awards and soon began making jokes about the celebrities in attendance and those who were conspicuously absent.

Among those absent from the Dolby theater who still play a key role in Kimmel’s monologue: Will Smith, who earned a 10-year Oscar ban after storming the stage and slapping Chris Rock last year.

“We want you to have fun,” Kimmel told the audience. “We want you to feel safe. Most importantly, we want to me feel safe.”

“So we have strict rules in place: if anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded an Oscar for Best Actor and will be able to give a 19-minute speech.”

Kimmel noted that after last year’s incident, the Oscars have a crisis team for this year.

He joked, “If something unpredictable or violent happens during the ceremony, just do what you did last year: nothing. Sit down and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even hug the attacker.”

Kimmel opened the ceremony by paying homage to Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick by digitally inserting himself into a flight scene and reluctantly jumping out of the cockpit, landing on the Dolby stage.

This happened even when real fighter jets paid tribute to the film by flying over Los Angeles. US Navy pilots flying F/A-18 Super Hornets flew over Hollywood Boulevard after taking off from Lemoore Naval Air Station near Fresno.

Kimmel, hosting for the third time, also had some fun at the ceremony with some prominent Hollywood luminaries.

For example, Steven Spielberg, the only director to have been nominated in six different decades, with his nomination for the semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans.

Noting that Spielberg was sitting next to Seth Rogen, he encouraged the notorious drug addict to share some substances with the director.

“Stephen claims he has never even smoked weed. I find it hard to believe. Are you saying you were sober when you were making a movie about an alien who eats Reese’s Pieces all day and can’t remember how to call home? as tall as a bicycle when you made this film.”

He also had some fun with the traditional length of the Oscar show, which added more categories this year.

He noted that director James Cameron and Tom Cruise were absent from the show.

“You realize the show is too long when even James Cameron can’t sit through it.”
