Orchestra Noir, an all-black orchestra, makes a stop in North Texas

Orchestra Noir presents its one of a kind show in North Texas.

According to the League of American Orchestras, black maestros make up just 1.8% of conductors in the country. Maestro Jason Ikim Rogers is one of them. He founded Orchestra Noir in 2016.

“It’s really cool because I love art, you know, and I think what really matters in art is that we show people of color that there’s a place for us,” Rogers said.

With an orchestral performance, Orchestra Noir celebrates the cultural achievements of the pioneers of African American music in all musical genres, including classical, jazz, blues, hip-hop and R&B.

“Being in classical music, coming from North Philadelphia from public housing and knowing that I went all the way and now I’m introducing it to people of color and inspiring kids is amazing,” Rogers said.

The orchestra, based in Atlanta, Georgia, became so popular that several artists wanted to collaborate. Rapper Rick Ross is one of them.

“It’s interesting because in the music industry, you know, we have rappers and singers, they sort of understand what a producer is, and that makes a beat, and those beats, you know, are made up of strings and guitars and drums. Then you talk about the live version of it, so these rappers and musicians, they’re like, hey wait, I can perform with real instruments, a big string section with horns and like sign me,” Rogers said.

He said audiences can expect much more than just a show, but an experience.

“We cover the whole spectrum and it’s really great to see how hip-hop and R&B fit together. It’s great to see these black musicians playing symphonic music and doing it in their own way. I think people will take it from the performance,” Rogers said.

Orchestra Noir will make a stop in downtown Dallas on Saturday, March 11 at the Majestic Hotel.
